Dial A Ride’s longest serving manager leaves the Charity after 27 years! Julie Banks is leaving Scarborough based community transport charity, Dial A Ride after 27 years’ service. When she started as a part time administrator in 1995, the service had 5 minibuses and was based in unsuitable, cramped accommodation at the old Allatt House. Taking over as manager in 2000, she has overseen the charity through many challenges and changes over the years from volunteer and funding shortages to operating permits and Covid. Dial A Ride moved to purpose built premises in 2010 and now operates 8 minibuses and 3 accessible cars and currently has 40 drivers and passenger assistants, the vast majority of whom are volunteers. Julie, who is leaving for family reasons, said ‘Dial A Ride and the people who work there and those who we help have been such a huge part of my life for the past 27 years it is difficult to imagine not being involved. It has been a real privilege to work with some truly caring, generous and amazing people – I have worked with over 600 volunteers and staff since I started. I will really miss the people who work here and the passengers, especially chatting to them on the phone and listening to their stories. I wish Tim every continued success. Deputy Manager Tim Lawson, who has been involved with the charity for 24 years, moves up into the Manager’s role and will be joined by new employee Graeme Needham with longstanding administrator Maria Hunter making up the management team. Tim Lawson said “I feel honoured to take on the mantle here at Dial A Ride. We have an extraordinary team of dedicated drivers and passenger assistants that give such a lot to maintain this most valuable service to our community. However, we are always on the look out for new minibus and car drivers to help keep up with demand. And, of course, next year we celebrate our 40th anniversary so there are exciting times ahead”.
Everyone at Dial A Ride wishes Julie a very happy and long retirement. Thank you, Julie, for making Scarborough Dial A Ride the best community charity ever! June 2022
